NORTH CONWAY, N.H. - UMass Skiing had mixed results at this weekend's Slalom meet at the UConn Carnival in North Conway, N.H. The Women's squad was consistent with two fifth place team finishes throughout the weekend, led by Ashley Hawes, while the Minutemen finished fourth on Friday before placing first on Saturday, led by Matthew Small (Shelburne Falls, Mass.). Both squads will be back in action next weekend when they will travel to Waterville Valley to compete in the Plymouth State Carnival.

Small had a big weekend for the Minutemen, and was essential in the Men's recovery on Saturday, finishing third with a time of 1:43.69 after skiing to a fifth place finish on Friday (1:27.29). Andrew Hawes (Concord, Mass.) took Saturday's heat with a time of 1:24.28, just three seconds ahead of Small. The win was Hawes' first college race victory. Travis Hopkins (North Andover, Mass.) was also steady during the weekend, placing 12th on Friday (1:47.02) before an 11th place finish on Saturday with a time of 1:28.10.

Stefan Ogle (Pittsfield, Mass.) had a successful day on Saturday as well, tying Hopkins for 11th place after a 36th place finish on Friday (1:57.83). Senior Alex Zahoruiko (North Andover, Mass.) skied to a 16th place finish on Saturday with a time of 1:28.54 while Tom Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) finished 26th on Saturday after a 27th place finish on Friday with times of 1:31.73 and 1:52.30, respectively. Paul Lewenberg (Natick, Mass) finished 25th on Friday (1:52.12) before a 28th place finish on Saturday (1.33.27).

 

 

Ashley Hawes (Concord, Mass.) led the Minutewomen on Friday, finishing third with a time of 1:48.61, the only top-15 finish for the Women's team all weekend. The Minutewomen were without one of their top skiers, Jamie Taloumis, who was recovering from frostbite and did not compete over the weekend. Amy Gifford (Readfield, Maine) finished 22nd on Friday before a 17th place finish on Saturday with times of 1:54.73 and 1:36.99, respectively. Emily Shilletto (Toronto, Ont.) skied to a 16th place finish on Saturday (1:36.39) while teammate Heidi Skinner (Westeron, Vt.) finished 18th on Friday with a time of 1:54.14.

Abby Nolan (Duxbury, Mass.) completed both runs for the weekend, finishing 27th on Friday (1:56.15) and 24th on Saturday with a time of 1:39.63. Alison Hubbard (Colden, N.Y.) finished 23rd on Saturday (1:39.43) after a 25th place finish Friday with a total time of 1:55.41. Lauren Levey (Mequon, Wis.) skied to a 23rd place finish on Friday with a time of 1:54.78 before a 19th place finish Saturday. Katie Weissman (Old Tappan, N.J.) also had 41st and 31st place finishes over the weekend for the Minutewomen.

Women's Skiing Finishes Sixth In Giant Slalom At USCSA Nationals
  • Giant Slalom Results
    The UMass Women's Ski Team got underway at the USCSA Nationals on Wednesday, skiing to a sixth place finish in the Giant Slalom in Winter Park, Colo. Emily Shilletto (Toronto, Ont.) led the way for the Minutewomen, finishing 13th. The Women's Team will be back in action on Friday when they will compete in the Slalom.

    Q&A With Head Ski Coach Skip Fox Recapping The ECSC Regionals
    The UMass Women's Ski Team captured a trip to the USCSA Nationals next weekend after their fifth place finish in last weekend's ECSC Regionals. The Minutewomen placed three skiers in the top-15 during both days of the Regionals. The Men's team, the defending USCSA National Champions, will not be returning to the Nationals after their sixth place finish over the weekend. The Minutemen had a tough day in Saturday's Slalom, finishing in ninth place before recovering with a second place finish in the Giant Slalom.

  • Slalom Results | Giant Slalom Results
    The UMass Ski team competed in the ECSC Regionals this past weekend in Waterville Valley, N.H. The women's team finished fifth overall, securing a spot in the USCSA Nationals in Winter Park, Colo. from March 3-7. The Men's team finished sixth overall after a disappointing ninth place finish in the Slalom before a second place finish in Sunday's Giant Slalom. UMass Skiing will be back in action this weekend when they will participate in the EISA Regionals at Sugarloff.
