UMass alum Wes Piermarini ('04) and partner Elliot Hovey rowed their way to a historic team victory on Thursday, qualifying for the Olympic Games in Beijing that start on Aug. 8. Along with completing his undergaduate degree at UMass, Piermarini is also a current Master of Architecture student on leave of absence while training for the Olympics. The memorable win capped off a week which began on Monday, June 8. Piermarini, a walk-on to the club team as a freshman, enjoyed much success while at UMass, learning both from his Head Coach Tony Cronin and current Women's Rowing Varsity Coach Jim Dietz.
UMass senior rower Sarah Marsan was named to the Mid-Atlantic All-Region second team by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. The CRCA also honored Marsan, Airlina Burrill, Erin Kelly, Amanda Mawn, Karen Plevock, and Amy Rayla as National Scholar-Athletes. Rayla is a first time honoree and the other five rowers are repeat winners. (more)
The UMass women's rowing team completed on the Schuylkill River at the Dad Vail Regatta this weekend in Philadelphia, Pa. The Minutewomen's JV Eight boat placed second overall while the Novice Eight took sixth. The team did not place overall. Buffalo took first in the even with 21 points, with Purdue in second with 18 and Grand Valley in third with 16. (more)
The UMass women's rowing team will head to Philadelphia, Pa. to compete in one of the oldest and most prestigious regattas in the country. The Dad Vail, named after crew Coach Harry Emerson "Dad" Vail from the University of Wisconsin, will be held on the Schuylkill River Friday and Saturday.
The UMass women's rowing team raced on Saturday at the ECAC Championships in Camden, N.J. The Varsity Eight took fourth, while the JV Eight placed second, and the Novice Eight placed third.
Three UMass rowers were named to the Atlantic 10 Academic All Conference Team. Junior Airlina Burrill (Eastham, Mass.), senior Sarah Marsan (Cincinnati, Ohio), and senior Amy Rayla (Still River, Mass.) earned the academic honors in voting conducted among the Conference's sports information directors.
