Oct. 29, 2012
AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass Sports Luncheon Committee has chosen sophomore Taryn Wilson of women's rowing and junior Antony Taylor of men's cross country as UMass Co-Athletes of the Week for their performances this weekend. Wilson led UMass to an outstanding showing at the Head of the Fish Regatta on Saturday. The Minutewomen captured eight gold medals and two silver medals with Wilson individually accounting for two gold and one silver medal. Taylor headlined for UMass in the A-10 Championships this weekend by claiming the top spot for UMass and 11th overall, qualifying himself for A-10 All-Conference and assisting the Minutemen in their eighth place finish as a team.
Wilson competed in three races throughout the day, each four kilometers long, and medaled in all of them. Along with freshman Allanah Rubi-Mooney, Wilson finished with a time of 14:21.34 in the pair, winning the race and beating the boat from Saratoga by just 18 seconds. The lightweight 8+ race was far less close, and the UMass boat, with Wilson in the sixth seat, earned the victory with a time of 13:36.92, nearly a minute ahead of the boat from Tufts University. Wilson and sophomore Rachel Boudreau weren't able to catch up with the boat from Narragansett, and took second place with a time of 14:07.31, just ten seconds away from the victory.
Taylor claimed All-Conference honors with his top-15 finish in Saturday's 2012 Atlantic 10 Conference Championships. The cross country standout led the way for the Minutemen finishing 11th in a field of 136 total runners. The Arlington, Mass. native finished the 8k race in 26 minutes, 5 seconds and was just 0.6 seconds away from a top 10 finish. Taylor's performance contributed to the men's 8-of-16 finish in the championship.
The men's cross country team will run in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships next week on Friday, November 9 in Madison Conn. at 12:00 PM. The women's rowing squad will compete in the Green Monster in Hanover, N.H. this Saturday, November 3.
