Minutewomen Take On Head Of the Charles Weekend

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass rowing team will take on the Head of the Charles regatta this weekend on October 20 and 21. Members of the team will row in the varsity eight and varsity four events over the course of the weekend.

Head coach Jim Dietz will also be rowing in the prestigious event. Dietz has rowed in every Head of the Charles except one since its conception in 1965. This year he will row in the masters double event.

Last year, the Minutewomen had an impressive showing at the regatta, taking seventh of 28 in the single and ninth out of 28 in the varsity eight. The UMass 4+ took tenth of 20.

Checking the Forecast
It looks to be a beautiful weekend in Cambridge with highs of 71 on Saturday and 62 on Sunday. There are a chance of morning showers on Saturday and it will be sunny all day long on Sunday.

The 2012-13 Minutewomen
• This year's squad is returning 34 athletes from last season and has added 26 including two transfers.
• The junior class boasts 20 returners while just four members of the Class of 2013 remain.
Kendall Bennett is returning as a graduate student and will be seen in the Varsity Eight this fall season.

The 2012 Fall Schedule
• Selected members of the team will start off the season at the Head of the Oklahoma, a new addition to the UMass schedule. This will be the first time the Minutewomen compete in the Oklahoma City, Okla. event.
• The Head of the Housatonic will be the first regatta the full team participates in. The Minutewomen make the Housatonic an annual affair, and last year the Novice 8+ took second place and took first place in the double.
• The Head of the Charles is the Minutewomen's third race of the season where members of the team will compete, traditionally in the 8+, 4+, 2X, and 1X. Last year the V8+ finished in ninth place out of 28 and the V4+ finished in tenth out of 20.
• The Head of the Fish will be the last race for the full squad. Last year the Minutewomen took home four gold medals in the double, the lightweight four, the mixed eight and the novice four.
• The novice rowers will race in the Green Monster and at the Foot of the Charles. Last year the Novice 8+ took eighth at the Foot of the Charles.

The 2012 Spring Season
• Last season the Varsity Four was the boat to beat for the Minutewomen. The lineup consisted of current rowers Arielle Gillette, Adrienne Breef-Pilz, Hannah Monahan, coxswain Heather Pekarovich and former rower Emily Sgarlat. In total the boat won six gold medals and two silver medals in eight races.
• The Junior Varsity Eight also had a good season, finishing strong with a win at the Knecht Cup in the Petite Final and a second place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championship Regatta.
• UMass was well represented at the Dad Vail Regatta, taking two first place finishes and one second place finish for its three boats entered. The single and the pair were the boats that came out on top, and the second single boat took second.

Decorated Freshmen
Nicole Destefano competed in the 2012 Royal Henley Regatta in England after taking third place in the C Final at Youth Nationals in the double.
Allanah Rubi-Mooney also competed in Youth Nationals and took sixth place in the B Final in the quad.
Kaylah Kleczka and DeStefano rowed against each other at Scholastic Nationals in the double. DeStefano took first place in the semi-final race and Kleczka finished in third to continue on to the finals. DeStefano beat out Kleczka for a gold medal by just a half of a second with a time of 5:44.552. Kleczka took silver with a time of 5:45.083.
• Kleczka rowed in the 2011 Royal Canadian Henley Regatta and at the 2011 Royal Women's Henley Regatta in England in the quad.
Krysten Menks represented the United States at the CanAmMex Regatta in Mexico City, Mexico this past summer in the quad and also attended the US Junior Sculling Selection Camp.
