Five Future Minutewomen Succeed At USRowing Youth Nationals

LAKE NATOMA, Calif. - Five incoming freshmen for the University of Massachusetts rowing program were active at the 2014 USRowing Youth National Championships, hosted on Lake Natoma outside of Folsom, Calif., from Friday, June 13 through Sunday, June 15. Katherine Armstrong, Lauren Azuela, Charlotte Bleiler, Grace Bundy and Stephanie Giovenelli all placed fifth or higher in their respective finals.

Bundy took second in the `A' Final of the 4x with GMS Rowing in 7:24.816 while Giovenelli also participated in the Lightweight 2x `A' Finals with the Essex Rowing Club. She finished the race in 8:14.405.

Armstrong and Azuela each appeared in a `B' Final, with Armstrong racing as part of the Marina Aquatic Center's 8+ and Azuela participating with the Austin Rowing Club 4+. Armstrong helped Marina Aquatic to a third place finish with a time of 7:16.990, less than 0.9 seconds behind the second place boat. Azuela's 4+ crossed the line in 8:16.793 for fifth place but was only 3.6 seconds out of second.

Bleiler also competed for Essex alongside Bundy, with Bleiler a member of the 4x that took third in the `C' Final in 7:58.825.
