AMHERST, Mass. - Senior pitcher Sara Plourde of the softball team and the Varsity Four of the rowing team have been named Co-Athletes of the week for their performances this past weekend. The six athletes will be honored at the final UMass Sports Luncheon of the year, which will feature speakers Mike Stone (Baseball), Sam Koch (Men's Soccer) and Ed Matz (Women's Soccer).

Plourde, a senior from Bristol, Conn. was named Atlantic 10 Championship Most Outstanding Player after she went 3-0 with 33 strikeouts and allowed just five hits (two 2-hitters and a 1-hitter). She batted a tournament-best .571 with a .741 slugging pct., while recording two RBI and a run in victories over George Washington (twice) and Fordham. The USA Softball Player of the Year finalist also moved into eighth place on the NCAA Division I career strikeout list with 1,641.

The Varsity Four took a second place finish in the Grand Final of the Eastern Sprints at the Cooper River in New Jersey with a time of 7:32.55 behind the Virgina boat which finished less than sixteen seconds earlier. Heather Pekarovich coxed the boat along with the familiar lineup of Arielle Gillette, Hannah Monahan, Emily Sgarlat, and Adrienne Breef-Pilz. The group shaved nearly 10 seconds off its time earlier in the day in the Varsity Four Heat as one of six teams to qualify for the final. The Minutewomen beat out Boston University, Buffalo, Rhode Island and Navy to place second in the Grand Final. The Varsity Four has had seven first place finishes this season.
