Jan. 27, 2014
AMHERST, Mass. -
The UMass rowing team has been named the winner of the 2013 CHAMPS Cup, awarded by the UMass Athletic Department's Academic Services Office. The squad received the honor after all 19 UMass varsity teams were tracked throughout the 2013 calendar year in the categories of community service, academic achievement, big game attendance, life skills development, participation in the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and athletic excellence.
Rowing led most categories, including community service, big game attendance, life skills development and attendance in the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. The program dethroned two-time defending champion women's soccer after edging out field hockey and women's lacrosse, who finished second and third, respectively. The Minutewomen will be acknowledged during halftime of the Wednesday, Feb. 5 men's basketball game against La Salle at the Mullins Center.
UMass rowing will begin its 2014 season on March 22 in nearby Hadley, Mass., as the squad takes on Coast Guard in the first of 10 events this spring.
