FAIRFAX STATION, Va. - The University of Massachusetts rowing team claimed the 2014 Atlantic 10 Rowing Championship on Sunday, May 4, scoring 52 points to narrowly defeat two-time defending champion Rhode Island on the Occoquan Reservoir in Fairfax Station, Va. As a result of the victory, the Minutewomen earned the A-10's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, their first appearance since 1998.

The Minutewomen will send their Varsity 4+, Varsity 8+ and Second Varsity 8+ boats to the NCAA Championship, which is set to begin on Friday, May 30. This victory marks UMass' conference-leading 14th overall Atlantic 10 Championship and first since 2009. The program took gold in the Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ races and notched a second place finish in the Second Varsity 8+ event.

"The entire coaching staff is extremely proud of how each individual stepped up and performed at their highest level today and to the athletes that did not come with us that played a big part in our success," head coach Jim Dietz said. "I can speak for the coaching staff, the athletes, the alumni and the families to say, this is a great day for UMass rowing and we are excited to be headed to the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis."

UMass won the Varsity 8+ race in a time of 7:26.00, five seconds ahead of second place Rhode Island, which earned the Minutewomen 27 points. The boat continued its unprecedented undefeated campaign and consisted of Heather Pekarovich, Taryn Wilson, Emily Mann, Marika Kopp, Pippa Edwards, Candace Miller, Sam Kolovson, Lauren St. Pierre and Allanah Rubi-Mooney.

The first-seeded Varsity 4+ boat of Emily Hajjar, Rachel Boudreau, Gabrielle Hayward, Kyla Miller and Sam Wonderlin also took the top spot with a time of 8:23.50 to provide Massachusetts with nine points toward the team total.

In the Second Varsity 8+ race, UMass tallied 16 points and finished behind Rhode Island in a time of 7:47.93. The boat consisted of Haley Eovine, Haley York, Hannah Monahan, Rebecca Adams, Hadley Irvin, Catherine Murphy, Teagan Rolf von den Baumen, Krysten Menks and Nicole Juul-Hindsgaul.

The Atlantic 10 Champion Massachusetts Minutewomen will continue the spring season May 9-10 at the annual Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa.
