Rowing Claims Two First Place Finishes in Four-Team Meet

BOSTON - The University of Massachusetts rowing team continued its spring season on Saturday afternoon on the Charles River in Boston, Mass., and won two races against Bates, MIT and Radcliffe. The Minutewomen took first in the Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ races.
The Varsity 8+ boat finished in first with a time of 7:27.8, which was less than three seconds ahead of second place Bates. The UMass boat of Heather Pekarovich, Taryn Wilson, Emily Mann, Marika Kopp, Pippa Edwards, Candace Miller, Sam Kolovson, Nicole Juul-Hindsgaul and Allanah Rubi-Mooney continued its undefeated season.
In the Varsity 4+ race, the watch did not work, so officials recorded margins instead. The Minutewomen were victorious by 8.6 seconds over Radcliffe and 27 seconds over the second UMass Varsity 4+ boat. The winning UMass boat consisted of Emily Hajjar, Rachel Boudreau, Gabrielle Hayward, Kyla Miller and Sam Wonderlin.
In the second Varsity 8+ race, the Minutewomen finished third, but narrowly missed a second place finish by one second. The third Varsity 8+ boat also notched a third place finish in 8:19.2. Lastly, the Novice 8+ boat rounded out competition on Saturday by competing against the fourth Varsity 4+ boat of Radcliffe, finishing in a time of 7:55.0 - 20.2 seconds behind.
The Minutewomen will return to action on Sunday, May 4 in Occoquan, Va., for the Atlantic 10 Championship Regatta.

Conditions: Choppy, head wind for the first couple of races, which became more gusty and an almost direct crosswind by the end of the morning.
