Minutewomen Dominate Knecht Cup Prelims

CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The UMass rowing team began competition at the Knecht Cup on Saturday, April 14 in Camden, N.J. The varsity four won both their preliminary race and their semi-final race and will advance to the grand final on Sunday. Both UMass pairs won their preliminary heats and will advance to the final.

The varsity four finished their preliminary race with a time of 7:51.70, the fastest in their heat and the second fastest time of all 30 boats that raced. In their semi-final race, they again finished with the second fastest time overall, finishing with a time of 7:40.10, which was just one second shy of the leading boat from Kansas.

The UMass B pair, rowed by Michaela Streitfield and Kendall Bennett, finished with the overall fastest time of 8:27.42. The UMass A pair, rowed by Kaitlin MacKenzie and Angela Stigliano, finished with the second fastest overall time of 8:37.97. Both boats finished first in their heats.

The novice four, coxswained by Caitlyn O'Leary finished second in their heat with a time of 8:36.99 and advanced to the semi-final race later in the day, where they finished sixth in their heat with a time of 9:03.55 and didn't qualify for the final heat on Sunday.

The varstiy eight, lead by coxswain Heather Pekarovich, finished in third place in their heat with a time of 6:56.27, which qualified them for the semi-final race later in the day. The boat finished in sixth in the semi-final race and did not qualify for the final on Sunday. The second varsity eight boat, coxswained by Madolyn Chiu, finished in second place in their heat with a time of 7:05.64. In their semi-final race, they finished in fourth place, which qualified the boat for the petite final on Sunday.

 

 

The novice eight finished with a time of 7:39.30, which qualified them for the semi-final race, where they came in fifth place in their heat and did not qualify for any final race.

The Minutewomen will finish competition tomorrow, April 15, where they will compete in the final rounds of competition.
