Rowing Starts Season Strong

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's rowing team opened the 2004 season with a pair of strong showings over the weekend. The Minutewomen began the weekend by defeating New Hampshire and Rhode Island in a pair of races held in Worcester, Mass., on Saturday. UMass then won two out of four races on Sunday against Columbia and Holy Cross in the Bronx, N.Y.
On Saturday, the varsity eight was victorious in a time of 6:39.50, defeating both Rhode Island (6:54.00) and New Hampshire (7:11.30). The Minutewomen also finished in first place in the second varsity eight with a time of 7:06.70, with Rhode Island placing second (7:16.93) and New Hampshire coming in third (7:37.30).
In Sunday's competition, UMass claimed first place in the varsity eight with a time of 6:48.01, outdistancing both Columbia (6:58.75) and Holy Cross (7:22.50). The Minutewomen also claimed first place in the novice eight with a time of 7:21.43, toping Columbia's time of 7:33.14.
UMass claimed a pair of second place finishes on Sunday as well, as the second varsity eight posted a time of 7:30.53, coming in behind Columbia (7:21.63) and ahead of Holy Cross (7:34.96). In addition, the varsity four with coxswain had a time of 8:18.68, placing just behind Columbia (8:14.93).
The Minutewomen will return to action this Saturday, April 10, when they compete against Brown and Rutgers in Providence, R.I.
