Rowing Wins Three Races Over BC, Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. - The UMass rowing team began its spring season on Saturday racing against Boston College and Atlantic 10 Conference foe Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I., where the Minutewomen captured first in the Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+ and the second Varsity 4+.
The Varsity 8+ boat finished in a time of 7:14.08, three seconds ahead of second place Rhode Island. The boat recorded the best time of the entire event and consisted of Heather Pekarovich, Taryn Wilson, Emily Mann, Marika Kopp, Pippa Edwards, Candace Miller, Sam Kolovson, Lauren St. Pierre and Allanah Rubi-Mooney.
The Varsity 4+ boat of Emily Hajjar, Haley York, Hannah Monahan, Nicole Juul-Hindsgaul and Sam Wonderlin took home the second gold of the day for UMass in 8:26.90. All three boats in the event finished within eight seconds of each other. The second Varsity 4+ recorded a time of 8:41.41, besting second place Boston College by only three seconds. The boat consisted of Abigail Raichek, Rebecca Adams, Courtney Edson, Maggie Curran and Hadley Irvin.
In the second Varsity 8+ event, UMass tallied a third place finish with a time of 7:46.74. The third Varsity 8+ boat also finished in third in 7:55.83, only four tenths of a second behind Boston College. The fourth Varsity 8+ boat rounded out competition for the Minutewomen and completed the course in 8:49.18.
UMass will return to action next Saturday, April 5, at Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.
