Rhode Island Outlasts UMass Rowing In Season Opener

Rhode Island took first in four events against UMass on the Connecticut River on Saturday.

AS A SENIOR IN 2015-16
Spring 2016: Competed in the Third Varsity 8+ in the season home opener against Atlantic 10 conference rival Rhode Island (3/26) ... Crossed the line in 7:45.83 in the Third Varsity 8+ in a dual regatta at Connecticut (4/2) ... Finished fourth in Heat 1 of the Third Varsity 8+ at the Knecht Cup with a time of 7:31.71 (4/10) ... Finished fourth in the Third Varsity 8+ with a time of 7:22.0 at the Four-School Regatta on the Charles River between Northeastern, Boston University and Dartmouth (4/17).

Fall 2015: Did not compete.

AS A JUNIOR IN 2014-15
Spring 2015: Placed fourth as a member of the Third Varsity 8+ race at the Knecht Cup Finals (4/12) ... Earned a silver medal in the Novice 8+ boat in head-to-head meet with Connecticut (4/16) ... Took second place in the Third Varsity 8+ event in dual meet with Boston University, Northeastern and Brown.

Fall 2014: Was a member of the 8+ boat that finished 23rd at the Head of the Housatonic (10/11) with a time of 16:16 ... Placed 13th in the 1x at the Seven Sisters Sculling Regatta (10/12) with a time of 25:55.0 ... Picked up a fourth place finish as a member of the JV 8+ boat (13:04.24) at the Head of the Fish (10/25).

Spring 2014: Took third place in the Third Varsity 8+ event at the Yankee Cup (3/29), finishing only four seconds behind first place Rhode Island ... Rowed in the 4V8+ boat and finished first in the Second Varsity 8+ race in 8:23.00 against Colgate (4/6) ... Competed in the 3V8 race in a five team meet on the Connecticut River (4/6) ... At the Knecht Cup (4/12-4/13), rowed as part of the Third Varsity 8+ boat and advanced to the Finals ... Raced in the 3V8+ boat against UConn (4/18), and MIT, Bates and Radcliffe (4/19).

Fall 2013: Raced in the Collegiate 8+ at the Head of the Housatonic (10/12) ... Placed second in the JV 8+ at the Head of the Fish (10/26) with a time of 14:12.6 and also rowed in the Collegiate 4+.

Spring 2013: Was part of the Fourth Varsity 8+ boat at the Yankee Cup (3/30), taking second in a time of 8:43.76 ... Helped the Second Novice 8+ boat to a silver medal finish at the Knecht Cup (4/13-4/14) in 7:50.95.

Fall 2012: Raced in the Novice 8+ at the Green Monster (11/3) ... Also competed the following weekend in the Novice 8+ at the Foot of the Charles (11/10).

BEFORE UMASS: A 2012 graduate from Mount Ararat High School ... Played on the basketball and field hockey teams ... Was the team captain for basketball and field hockey and received the coaches award in both.

PERSONAL: Leah Payson Hitchcock ... Daughter of Colt Hitchcock and Andrea Najarian ... Majoring in political science.
