Women's Lacrosse To Host Alumnae Fall Ball Game On Saturday
Oct. 10, 2006
AMHERST, Mass. - Fans can catch a sneak peek of the 2007 UMass women's lacrosse team and new head coach Alexis Venechanos as the Minutewomen have announced they will host a scrimmage against the alumnae on Saturday, Oct. 14 at Noon. The game will be held on Garber Field and admission is free to all.
The following Saturday, Oct. 22, UMass will conclude its fall ball schedule when the Minutewomen take part in the Dartmouth Tournament facing New Hampshire, Vermont and host-school Dartmouth. That will also begin at Noon.
"We are excited to have the opportunity to play in two more fall dates. Our Alumnae Game and the Dartmouth tourney will give us some great competition and it is a great way to end fall ball."
The Minutewomen return 18 letterwinners for the 2007 campaign including almost 80 percent of its offensive scoring. Junior Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.) is the top returning scorer after having a banner year in 2006 where she tallied 43 goals - the fifth-best single season effort in school history. For her efforts, she was named to the IWLCA All-Region Team, the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team, and the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team.
Defensively, UMass will return its entire defensive row with the exception of Nesbitt. The Minutewomen will also return the tandem of experienced keepers in redshirt-senior Lauren McCarthy (Derry, N.H.) and junior Krissy Anderson (Baldwin, N.Y.) between the pipes.
Venechanos enters her first season at UMass after helping Northwestern to back-to-back National Championships as an assistant coach. She was also a standout goalie at Maryland where she won two national titles as a player.
UMass is looking to build upon its strong finish from last season where the Minutewomen won four of their final six regular season games and qualified for the A-10 Conference Tournament.
