Cosgrove Named To IWLCA All-Region 2nd Team

AMHERST, Mass. - After posting the best season of her career, senior midfielder Merritt Cosgrove earned IWLCA All-North Region Second Team honors during the postseason. Cosgrove also earned Atlantic 10 First Team All-Conference, A-10 All-Tournament and A-10 All-Academic honors for the 2010 season.
For the season, the native of Carlsbad, Calif., scored 27 goals while adding three assists. Three of her goals were game-winners. Additionally, she led the Minutewomen with 47 draw controls while posting 26 groundballs and 16 caused turnovers - second most on the team.
Her 47 draw controls were the second most for a single-season in program history.
In her four seasons at UMass, Cosgrove started all 74 games of her career which is a new school record for games started and games played. She is one of just two players (Jackie Rosenzweig '09) to start 70 or more games.
In those 74 games, she tallied 48 career goals, six assists, and 54 points. She also recorded 115 draw controls, 63 groundballs, and 35 caused turnovers.
Her 115 draw controls ranks 3rd all-time at UMass, while her 35 caused turnovers ranks 10th.
The 2010 team captain helped UMass to a pair of A-10 Championship Tournaments (2009, 2010), two NCAA Tournaments (2009, 2010) and three appearances in the A-10 Championship title game (2008, 2009, 2010).
The All-Region nod was the first in Cosgrove's career. She earned A-10 All-Academic accolades in each of the three season's that she was eligible for the award (freshmen are not eligible). Additionally, the 2009 member of Team Ireland at the FIL World Cup earned IWLCA Academic Honor Roll honors in 2009 and earned A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll distinction in each semester of her time at UMass.
