May 15, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - After leading the UMass women's lacrosse team to an 18-3 overall record and a first round win over UConn in the NCAA Tournament, junior attack Katie Ferris and junior defender Kelsey McGovern were both named to the IWLCA All-America Third Team as announced Wednesday morning. This marks the first time since 1987 that UMass has had a pair of Minutewomen named to one of the IWLCA All-America teams in the same season.
In all, 48 student-athletes in Division I lacrosse were selected to the three All-America teams for 2013. The IWLCA will honor the National All-Americans at the IWLCA All-American banquet on May 25, 2013 at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge in King Prussia, Pa.
For Ferris, this marks the second consecutive year she has been named to the IWLCA All-America Third Team. The honor marks the first All-America honor for McGovern who is now the ninth player in program history to earn the national distinction.
Ferris led the UMass offense this year with 75 points on 52 goals and 23 assists in 19 games. For the second year in a row, she was named the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year and helped pace a Minutewomen offense that currently ranks No. 1 nationally in points scored (467) and No. 6 nationally in scoring offense (14.76 goals/game). In her three years, the UMass offense has ranked among the nation's top 10 including No. 1 at the end of 2012 and No. 7 in 2011.
With 245 career points, the native of Carthage, N.Y., broke the UMass career points record and will enter 2014 with the career records for goals and assists on the close horizon. She will enter her senior campaign as the active leading scorer in the NCAA and will have a chance to finish her career as one of the top 25 all-time point scorers in NCAA history.
McGovern had a breakout year both on defense and as the primary draw specialists for the Minutewomen. The native of Acton, Mass., earned IWLCA All-Region First Team honors and was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team and A-10 All-Academic Team.
She anchored a defensive unit which ranks 11th nationally in scoring defense (8.24 goals/game). Individually, McGovern set a new UMass single-season record with 110 draw controls which ranks third nationally and is the sixth-most for a single season in NCAA history. She has 145 draw controls for her career which ranks second all-time in program history.
The junior posted a highlight year overall with a career-high 28 caused turnovers and 38 groundballs. Despite tearing her ACL in the final regular-season game and missing the Atlantic 10 Championship tournament, McGovern did manage to play in both the NCAA first and second round games as UMass' draw specialist.
UMass loses four players from 2013 to graduation: Sarah Mullen, Cori Murray, Kelsey Palmer and Lauren Terracciano. Murray and Terracciano finished their senior years as the Minutewomen's No. 3 and No. 4 point scorers respectively. Palmer was a three-year starter on defense.
Along with Ferris, UMass will return Sam Rush on attack who currently ranks No. 3 nationally in goals scored this season with 65 (73 points).
