Trio Snags UMass Athlete Of Week Honors

AMHERST, Mass. - Three student-athletes combined to take home the UMass Athlete of the Week recognition on Monday afternoon as announced by the Weekly Sports Luncheon Committee. Cori Murray of the women's lacrosse team, Quianna Diaz-Patterson of the softball squad, and Daniel Wu from track and field were tabbed with the school's weekly honor for outstanding performances over the past week.
Murray's game-best five goal effort propelled the Minutewomen over Richmond 14-9 in the Atlantic 10 Championship game in Virginia. The Conference Title marks the fourth straight for the women's lacrosse program. Over the course of the 2012 campaign, Murray has played in all 19 contests for coach Angela McMaho, recording 31 goals and 12 assists for 43 points. She additionally has posted two game winning goals. The NCAA Play-In Game will take place on May 6 vs. Canisius for the Minutewomen, slated for a 12 p.m. start at McGuirk Stadium.
Diaz-Patterson posted one of the most productive weeks of any player in the league as she hit .643 with an on-base pct. of .706 and a slugging pct. of 1.071. The shortstop from Amherst, Mass. also collected at least one hit, one run and one RBI in all five games. Diaz-Patterson saw her batting average climb for the eighth-consecutive week to a season-high .378. In 15 A-10 games she is hitting .511 with nine extra-base hits, an .872 slugging pct., 23 RBI and a 1.000 fielding pct.
Climbing up in the UMass record books was the senior jumper Daniel Wu for the men's track and field team this past Saturday. The Tenafly, N.J. native recorded a mark of 24-00.25 in the long jump, marking a new school record in the event while taking home first place and qualifying for the New England Championships. Wu is currently ranked 47th in the NCAA East Region and first in the A-10 in the long jump. The men's track and field team will host the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships this Saturday and Sunday at the UMass Track and Field Complex.
All three athletes will be recognized at the Weekly Sports Luncheon, slated for Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. in the Camps Center's Room 1009.
