Carelli, Bigelow Named Spring Scholar-Athlete Award Winners

Women's lacrosse midfielder Melissa Carelli and men's track and field hurdler Stephen Bigelow were named the University of Massachusetts Spring Scholar-Athletes of the Year on Wednesday at the weekly UMass Sports Luncheon.
Hailing from Maplewood, N.J., Carelli has started all 14 games she has played in this season and has 23 goals and 11 assists which places her fourth on the team with 34 points. The midfielder also has 25 draw controls, 17 groundballs and eight caused turnovers.
For her career, she has played in 64 career games with 47 goals and 16 assists. She was named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team as a junior in 2013 in addition to her league academic honor. Carelli has been a member of the Atlantic Commissioner's Honor Roll during her career and has been a Dean's List member at UMass. Carelli and the women's lacrosse team is set to face Duquesne in the semi-finals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament in Richmond, Va., on May 2 at 3:30 PM.
Stephen Bigelow - Men's Track And Field - Senior Hurdler - Marketing - 3.72 GPA
To kick off 2014 the Winchester, Mass., native scored for the Minutemen in seven-of-eight indoor meets. His seven best performances all placed him in the top five of the meet in the 60 meter hurdles. At the 2014 Indoor Track and Field Championship he won his first conference medal finishing in just 8.10-seconds to win the bronze medal. At the end of the indoor campaign Bigelow was awarded his second Academic All-Conference for excellence on the track and in the classroom.
So far this outdoor season the senior co-captain has finished first in three-of-four meets with a second place finish. At the Holy Cross Invitational he ran the second fastest time in UMass history to win the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.37-seconds. This weekend Bigelow will compete in his final Atlantic 10 Championship in front of a home crowd at the UMass Track and Field Complex on May 3 and 4.
