Rush And Stoyle Awarded Weekly Honors
April 29, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - On Monday afternoon the UMass Sports Luncheon Committee chose to honor track and field's Becky Stoyle and Sam Rush of lacrosse as this week's UMass Co-Athlete's of the Week. This is Stoyle's fourth time winning the honor this season while this is Rush's second time claiming the honor. The track and field standout was then awarded Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week for the first time in her collegiate career. Stoyle broke the outdoor school record as well as the UMass Track and Field Complex facility record in the triple jump on Saturday while Rush was a key factor in the women's lacrosse program's fifth consecutive Atlantic 10 Conference Title.
Rush was named the Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Player after leading the Minutewomen to their fifth-consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship Title and a berth to the NCAA Tournament. Rush tallied a total of 10 points, with nine goals and one assist, during the championship weekend to lead UMass. Her six-goal performance in the championship game, including four straight in the second half, sparked the Minutewomen after leading second-seeded Duquesne by just one, 5-4, at halftime. The six-goals were a career high and gave her 61 for the season which is a new UMass single-season record and tied the most scored in a single-game during an Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament. On Friday against George Washington, she scored two of her three goals in the second half to spark UMass once again as the Minutewomen led the Colonials by just one at halftime, 5-4.
Stoyle highlighted the UMass Pre-Conference Meet with the best jump of her collegiate career. The sophomore leaped 41-feet, 10.75-inches in the triple jump and now ranks 13th in NCAA East and 25th in the country. The mark shatters the school record by seven inches and the UMass Track & Field Complex facility record by three inches. She now has the indoor A-10 record as well as the UMass indoor and outdoor records to go along with her indoor Atlantic 10 and New England gold medals in the event. The Pembroke, Mass. native is now the favorite to win the conference championships this weekend by 10.5-inches. The Minutewomen won the meet with a score of 164.5 points.
UMass Track and Field will compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship this weekend on Saturday and Sunday in Charlotte, N.C. Women's Lacrosse is now awaiting the NCAA Tournament Selection Show on Sunday to see who they will faceoff against in the first round of the tournament May 10.
This Wednesday at the UMass Sports Luncheon Chancellor Subbaswamy will be speaking as part of the spring scholar athlete presentation.
