AMHERST, Mass. - UMass senior midfielder Melissa Carelli was presented with the Hospitality & Tourism Management Senior Academic Excellence Award on Thursday night in a reception held at the Log Cabin restaurant in Easthampton. The award is presented annually to the senior in the Hospitality & Tourism Management department who has the highest grade point average among the graduating class.
Carelli, a native of Maplewood, N.J., was a member of the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team in 2013 and is again a candidate in 2014. The senior has started all 14 games she has played in this season and has 23 goals and 11 assists which places her fourth on the team with 34 points. The midfielder also has 25 draw controls, 17 groundballs and eight caused turnovers.
For her career, she has played in 64 career games with 47 goals and 16 assists. She was named to the All-Atlantic 10 First Team as a junior in 2013 in addition to her league academic honor. Carelli has been a member of the Atlantic Commissioner's Honor Roll during her career and has been a Dean's List member at UMass.
The senior is a member of one of the most successful classes in the history of UMass women's lacrosse. The group has a 68-9 record over the last four years which is the third best win record for any program in the country behind only Maryland and Northwestern. The class has won three consecutive Atlantic 10 Championships, made three trips to the NCAA Tournament including a trip to the NCAA Second Round last year, and has been one of the top offensive and defensive units in the country.
UMass enters the final weekend of regular-season play on Friday against St. Bonaventure and at Duquesne on Sunday. The Minutewomen carry a 34-game unbeaten streak against Atlantic 10 foes into the weekend including a 26 game win streak in regular-season play. The 26-game league win streak is currently the 5th longest in NCAA history for a conference win streak.
