April 21, 2014
AMHERST, Mass. - After scoring the game-winning goal in the 9-8 win at Richmond on Saturday, UMass women's lacrosse senior attack Sam Rush (West Babylon, N.Y.) has been named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week. The win game UMass sole possession of first place in the A-10 as both teams entered the contest with undefeated marks in league play. It also locked up a spot for the Minutewomen in the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament in two weeks.
Rush led all players in the game with three goals, including the game-winner, while adding two caused turnovers, a draw control and a groundball. Rush was held scoreless in the first half, but was key in the second.
After Richmond started the second half with a three-goal run to take a 6-3 lead, Rush scored twice as part of a four-goal UMass run to take a 7-6 lead with 23 minutes to go. After the game was tied at 8-8 with 10 minutes to go, Rush was able to get free to score the game-winning goal with 3:27 remaining.
The three goals scored give the senior a team-best 54 this year and 163 for her career. The game-winning goal was her 5th this season and the 14th of her career as well.
Rush now ranks 7th nationally in goals scored this season and she now ranks 3rd all-time at UMass in career goals. She needs eight more to take over 2nd place which is currently held by Pam Moryl (170, 1982-85).
UMass will host St. Bonaventure this Friday (1 PM) at McGuirk Stadium before heading to Pittsburgh to play Duquesne on Sunday (Noon). The Minutewomen have won 34 consecutive games against Atlantic 10 opponents including 26 straight in regular-season play. The 26-game regular-season win streak ranks 5th all-time in NCAA history.
