AMHERST, Mass. - UMass sophomore goalie Katie Florence was named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week after leading the women's lacrosse team to a pair of wins last weekend as announced by the league office on Monday. Florence made 17 saves while giving up just 15 goals in wins at George Washington and Richmond.
On Friday at George Washington, the native of Norfolk, Massachusetts gave up just seven goals while making eight saves. She also picked up three groundballs.
On Sunday she allowed just eight goals while making nine saves as UMass earned its first ever win at Richmond.
For the weekend, she posted a 7.50 goals against average and a .531 save percentage. It was the seventh time this season she has allowed 10-or-fewer goals in a game and the 15th time in her career.
This is the second time this year that Florence has earned Defensive POTW honors. On Feb. 23, she was named the leagues top defensive player after backstopping UMass to wins against Holy Cross and UConn. The 2009 A-10 All-Rookie Team selection was twice named the league's Rookie of the Week last season.
UMass will continue Atlantic 10 action this Saturday in Philadelphia at Temple. The opening draw is set for 1 PM.
