Rush, Vallarelli Earn Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse Weekly Honors

AMHERST, Mass. - After guiding UMass to a pair of wins at Vermont (16-6) and at home against Southern California (14-6), senior attack Sam Rush and junior goalie Rachel Vallarelli were each honored by the Atlantic 10 Conference. Rush was named the co-Player of the Week, while Vallarelli was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Week.
Rush led UMass with 9 goals in the two wins. The senior attack tied her season-high with five goals on the road at Vermont on Tuesday. At home on Saturday, she pegged another four goals to lead UMass to its ninth consecutive win. She now has six games with three-or-more goals this season. Rush also recorded her third game-winning goal of the year which came in Saturday's win over USC. Her nine goals during the week give her a team-best 30 for the season.
Vallarelli picked up a pair of wins in goal. For the week, she made 14 saves while allowing 12 goals overall for a .538 save percentage and a 6.00 GAA. She also collected five groundballs. In the win at Vermont, she made six total saves while allowing six goals on 25 shots faced and had four groundballs. In the win over USC, she made eight saves on 15 shots faced while allowing six goals and collected a groundball. For her career, Vallarelli now sports a 20-2 overall record with a 7.56 GAA and a .432 save percentage. Her 2014 GAA of 5.84 is a career best mark, while her save percentage of .473 is her second best total so far.
Rush shared the Player of the Week honor with Duquesne's Caitlin Prince.
The Minutewomen will return to action on Tuesday, March 25 in a top-10 showdown as No. 10 UMass hosts No. 7 Northwestern at McGuirk Stadium.
