March 20, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - Junior defender Kelsey McGovern was named the Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse Co-Defender of the Week as announced by the league office on Wednesday. McGovern helped the Minutewomen to wins over Vermont and at Sacred Heart while allowing just 13 goals in the two games. UMass will head to Holy Cross this afternoon for a 4 PM opening draw.
The honor marks the second time this season that McGovern has been named the A-10 Defender of the Week. It is also the fourth time this season that a UMass player has won the award.
In the wins over Vermont (16-5) and at Sacred Heart (21-8), the Acton, Mass., native tallied 14 draw controls, six groundballs and four caused turnovers. In the win over Vermont she had 8 draw controls, 5 groundballs and 2 caused turnovers to lead 17th-ranked UMass.
McGovern has started all nine games this season and leads the Minutewomen in draw controls (54), groundballs (26) and caused turnovers (16). She enters this week's action ranked 6th nationally in draw controls per game (6.0), 20th in groundballs and 26th in caused turnovers. Her 54 draw controls is also the 4th-best single-season total in program history, while her 89 in three seasons is just shy of cracking the program's all-time top-10 list.
The Minutewomen will close out their non-conference schedule today against the Crusaders. Next Saturday, March 30, UMass will officially begin Atlantic 10 play with a game at La Salle. The Minutewomen are seeking a league-record 5th consecutive conference championship title and enter the game against the Explorers with a 20-game win streak against Atlantic 10 teams in place.
