No. 13 Women's Lax Opens 2014 At Vanderbilt On Sunday
Feb. 7, 2014
The No. 13 UMass women's lacrosse team will travel to Tennessee to open the 2014 season on Sunday where the Minutewomen will face Vanderbilt at 1 PM (EST) in the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex.
This is the first meeting between the Minutewomen and the Commodores. Vanderbilt finished its 2013 campaign with a 2-15 overall record. UMass finished 2013 with an 18-3 finish overall and an undefeated 7-0 record in the Atlantic 10 marking the third consecutive year in which the Minutewomen posted a perfect record in league play.
The Minutewomen defeated Duquesne for their fifth straight A-10 Championship title advancing them to the NCAA Tournament. Coach McMahon's squad defeated No. 18 Connecticut in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to No. 7 Penn State in the second round. In the five consecutive seasons in which the team has made the tournament, its second round appearance marks the farthest they have gone.
Two All-Americans, Katie Ferris and Kelsey McGovern, look to lead the Minutewomen to their sixth consecutive Atlantic 10 title. Ferris helped the UMass offense rank No. 1 nationally in points scored (467) and she enters the 2014 season with the school career record for points. McGovern enters the year as one of the top defenders in the Atlantic 10, having set a UMass single-season draw control record (110) and leading UMass to an 11th national ranking in scoring defense.
The Minutewomen return 23 letterwinners from the 2013 campaign including nine starters and eight of the top 10 scorers. UMass is also experienced on defense with a veteran goalie and three of its four starters returning.
UMass enters the 2014 season with 29 consecutive wins over Atlantic 10 teams, a 26-game home win streak at McGuirk Stadium and a 54-8 overall record in the previous three years including a 33-8 non-conference record.
