Women's Lacrosse Falls To Richmond, 9-5

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The University of Richmond defeated the University of Massachusetts, 9-5, in the first round of the Atlantic 10 women's lacrosse championships at Arthur J. Rooney field. The Minutewomen finish the season 8-8 overall and 5-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond advances to the championship game tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. with a record of 11-5 on the season and 7-1 in conference play.

Richmond got on the board first when Libby Berlacher scored on a pass from Carrie Aitken at 26:04. Massachusetts sophomore Hope Zelinger (Ellicott City, Md.) tied the game, 1-1, on a free position goal at 22:56. The Spiders took a 2-1 lead at 21:58 on an unassisted goal from Jennifer Cielewich. UMass tied the game again at 22:09 when junior Lori Kain (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) scored on a pass from sophomore Tracey Drown (Nashua, N.H.). Richmond scored five straight goals, including two in the final minute, to close out the first half with a 7-2 lead.

Four minutes into the second half, the Spiders extended their lead to 8-2 on a goal from Katie Dolan. UMass responded with two consecutive goals from juniors Jada Emery (Princeton, N.J.) and Lydia Robinson (Summit, N.J) to cut the lead to 8-4. An unassisted goal from Dolan at 5:07 put the Spiders up 9-4. Robinson tallied one more goal for UMass, but it was not enough as the Minutewomen were defeated 9-5. Dolan led all scorers with four goals, while Polly Purcell tallied two goals and an assist for Richmond.

Junior goaltender Cyndi Doyle (Bridgewater, Vt.) had 15 saves in the net for the Minutewomen, while Kelly Johnson made five saves in goal for Richmond.
