Minutewomen Fall To Bonnies, 16-12

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -- The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team used a 11-5 second half charge to capture its first Atlantic 10 win of the season defeating Massachusetts today, 16-12, at McGraw Jennings Field.
The Minutewomen jumped out to an early lead, tallying the first three goals of the game. Then, at the 18:31 mark, senior Kelly Chevez (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester) scored the first St. Bonaventure goal.
At 17:16, Massachusetts' Kathleen Typadis netted a goal to bring the Minutewomen leading, 4-1.
The Bonnies' rallied to score four straight goals to pull ahead, 5-4, at the 11:35 mark. UMass regained the lead, scoring the last three goals of the first half to take a 7-4 advantage into the break.
At the start of the second half, sophomore Katie Hurley (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) fired a free position shot past the UMass goalie to bring the Bonnies within two. At 27:44, the Minutewomens' Shelley Boyle netted another UMass goal to lengthen the lead to three.
St. Bonaventure continued to fight back, getting two straight goals from junior Courtney Gibbons (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and classmate Sarah Dressler (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) to pull the Bonnies within one, 8-7.
The Minutewomen's Lindsay Cassell netted the ninth UMass goal before the Bonnies went on a six-goal rally to take the lead, 13-9. During the 6-0 run, he brown and white received two goals from Gibbons and one from Dressler, Hurley, Chevez and sophomore Megan Murphy (Syracuse, N.Y./ Corcoran).
UMass scored three more goals before the game was completed, but it was not enough to stop the Bona attack, who scored the game's final three goals to secure the 16-12 victory.
Gibbons netted a team-high five goals as well as a season-high eight draw controls on the day. Hurley chipped in three goals, while Murphy, Chevez, and Dressler each added two. Junior Alexis Spallone (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) and freshman Brenna Houghton (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) each scored one. Hurley also dished out a team-high three assists, while Chevez and Murphy each dished out two.
Freshman goalie Eboni Preston (New Windsor, Md./Westminister) improved her record to 3-2 on the season, while turning away 13 Minutewomen shots.
The win improves the Bonnies record to 8-3 overall and 1-3 in A-10 action, while the UMass falls to 4-8 and 1-2 in the conference.
