Women's Lacrosse Falls to Richmond, 10-8
April 7, 2002
AMHERST, Mass. - Richmond attacker Carri Aitken scored a season-high five goals to lead the University of Richmond to a 10-8 victory over the University of Massachusetts in women's lacrosse action this afternoon at President's Field. With the victory the Spiders improve to 7-5 on the season and 2-1 in conference play, while the Minutewomen fall to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic 10.
Richmond opened the scoring just 52 seconds into the game on a free position goal from Kristy Gallagher. The Spiders extended their lead to 4-0, before the Minutewomen responded with two goals in a 34-second span. Sophomore Hope Zelinger's (Ellicot City, Md.) goal at the 12 minute mark cut the Spider lead to two, but Richmond went on to score four goals in a four-minute span to take an 8-2 lead heading into the halftime break.
Massachusetts came out strong after the break scoring six straight goals to tie the game, 8-8. Junior Jada Emery (Princeton, N.J.) found the right corner of the cage in the 46th minute of play to pull the Minutewomen within one, 8-7. The Minutewomen won the ensuing faceoff and gave the ball to junior defender Bridget Byrne (Glenside, Pa.) who drove the crease and scored, tying the game at 8-8 with less than 12 minutes remaining. The goal marked Byrne's first of the season and only the second in her career. Richmond regained the lead for good when Aitken converted on a 12-meter, for her fifth goal of the game.
Emery led all Minutewoman scorers with two goals and an assist, while junior Lydia Robinson (Summit, N.J.) and Zelinger each tallied two goals for UMass.
The Minutewomen return to action on Friday, April 12, when they travel to Philadelphia to take on St. Joseph's. The game is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m.
