STORRS, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team (1-6) fell to the University of Connecticut (3-5), 19-13, in a high-scoring shootout this afternoon in Storrs, Conn. Senior captain Tracey Drown (Nashua, N.H.) led the Minutewomen with five points (4 g, 1 a), while sophomore midfielder Kerri Connerty (Nashua, N.H.) added four goals as well.
Connecticut jumped out to an early five-goal lead, led by Tammy Michel's three scores in the first 7:22. Connerty got the Minutewomen on the board with her first goal of the contest at 8:12, followed by Drown who scored her first of the game just 36 seconds later. UConn then went on another four-goal run, taking a 9-2 lead, before junior captain Maura McGarrity (Chester Springs, Pa.) put two more on the board for UMass, cutting the UConn edge to two. After two more Husky goals, Drown and Connerty tallied another goal each just before halftime, making the score 11-6 at the break.
The second half saw the game tighten up, with Connecticut holding an 8-7 scoring edge, not allowing the Minutewomen to chip away enough of the lead. Connerty tallied two more goals, senior Hope Zelinger (Ellicott City, Md.) scored twice, Drown sailed a pair past the UConn netminder and freshman Brianna Bubeck (Selkirk, N.Y.) notched one of her own.
Junior Joey Rubin (Yorktown, N.Y.) made six saves in the net for UMass after coming into the game at the 18:30 mark in the first half, replacing starter Lauren McCarthy (Derry, N.H.). UConn goalkeeper Jennifer Wong made five saves for the Huskies.
The Minutewomen will be back in action on Sunday, April 4, as they host Duquesne at Garber Field. The match is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.
