Women's Lacrosse Defeats St. Bonaventure, 11-8

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts defeated St. Bonaventure University, 11-8, in women's lacrosse action this afternoon at Richard F. Garber Field. UMass improves to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference play, while St. Bonaventure falls to 1-4 on the season.
Massachusetts opened the scoring at the 25:55 minute mark with a goal from junior Leslie Pollock (Watervliet, N.Y.). Less than two minutes later freshman Maura McGarrity (Pottstown, Pa.) scored on a pass from junior Kelli Kurtz (Schwenksville, Pa.) to put the Minutewomen up 2-0. Junior Lydia Robinson (Summit, N.J.) netted a goal with seven minutes remaining in the first to give the Minutewomen a 3-0 advantage heading into the halftime break.
St. Bonaventure got on the board with a goal from Laura Spaulding early in the second half, cutting the UMass lead to 4-1. Two consecutive goals by sophomore Hope Zelinger (Ellicott City, Md.) at the 23 minute mark gave UMass a 7-1 lead, before the Bonnies struck back with a goal from Kelly Chevez at 22:42. Robinson tallied her second goal of the game and Zelinger tallied her third to give the Minutewomen the largest lead of the game, 10-3. The Bonnies rallied late in the second half, scoring five of the last six goals to cut the defecit to three goals, but the Minutewomen held on for 11-8 victory.
Junior Cyndi Doyle (Bridgewater, Vt.) made 17 saves in cage for the Minutewomen, while Katy Jensen made 19 saves for St. Bonaventure.
The Minutewomen return to action on Wednesday, March 29 when they take on Duquesne at Richard F. Garber field. The game is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
