AMHERST, Mass. - The No. 17 UMass women's lacrosse team used an 11-goal run to start the first half before cruising to a 19-6 win over Siena on Saturday at McGuirk Stadium in its non-conference finale. Nine different Minuteowmen scored goals in the game - eight of whom found the net in the opening run. Defensively, the tandem of goalies Katie Florence and Rachel Vallarelli split time allowing the second fewest goals of the season.

The Minutewomen improve to 9-1 to close out the non-conference schedule and will open up Atlantic 10 play next Friday at Richmond and next Sunday at George Washington. UMass is seeking its fourth straight Atlantic 10 Conference championship. Siena falls to 2-7 on the year.

UMass' Katie Ferris led all scorers with eight points on four goals and four assists. Cori Murray finished the game with a pair of goals and three assists, while Lauren Terracciano and Sam Rush each posted three goals and an assist.

Florence earned the win in goal making six saves in 25 minutes of work. Vallarelli played 35 minutes in cage making four stops including several on point blank attempts by Siena.

The Saints were led by Deidre McQuillan who scored three goals, while Shannon Pfohl, Katie Maguire, and Maggie Deloria each added one. Kristin Concordia took the loss in goal making 11 saves.

The quick first half run was paced by a strong showing on the draw control. UMass won 11-of-15 draws in the first half including 10 of the first 11. That translated into an 11-0 lead with 12:30 left in the first half with Ellie Bullitt capping the run thaks to a feed from Ferris.

 

 

Siena got on the scoreboard after Deloria converted a free position attempt and then added another with a transition goal from McQuillan at the 2:55 mark of the half to make it 11-2.

UMass made it 12-2 after Bullitt collected a groundball on a blocked shot and then found Murray who threaded a pass to Rush for the goal. A pair of UMass shots with under a minute to go went wide but Siena was unable to capitalize after clearing the ball as the half came to a close.

The Minutewomen scored four of the first five goals to start the second half going up 16-3 after Ferris scored her team-best 32nd goal of the year at the 18:25 mark.

Murray added her second goal of the day on a free position attempt 12 minutes later to give UMass its largest lead of the game 19-4. McQuillan and Maguire closed out the games scoring with goals in the final 6:28 of action to give the 19-6 score.

For the game, UMass outshot Siena 38-to-21 including 25-to-9 in the first half. UMass also controlled the draw circle winning 18-of-26 and used a strong ride to disrupt the Saints transition game allowing Siena to clear the ball just 10 of 18 times.
