Women's Lacrosse Falls To Syracuse, 13-5

March 24, 2002

AMHERST, Mass. - Jessica Trombley tallied three goals and an assist to lead Syracuse University to a 13-5 victory over the University of Massachusetts in women's lacrosse action this afternoon at Richard F. Garber Field. Syracuse improves to 3-3 on the season, while UMass falls to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Syracuse opened the scoring with a goal by Carrie Soults from Kim Wayne at the 24:55 mark. The Orangewomen extended the lead to 3-0 on a two-goal burst from Devon Baer early in the first half. Sophomore Hope Zellinger (Ellicott City, Md.) put UMass on the board with an unassisted goal at the 15:26 mark.

The Orangewomen scored five unanswered goals, before the Minutewomen responded with a goal from junior Kelli Kurtz (Schwenksville, Pa.) with 1:26 remaining in the first half. Junior Lydia Robinson (Summit, N.J.) was credited with the assist. Leigh-Ann Zimmer scored on a free possesion with one second remaining in the first half to give Syracuse a 9-2 lead entering the halftime break.

Syracuse opened the second half with a pair of goals by Erica Mathewson, followed by goals from Jess Trombley and Erin MacDonald to take a 13-2 lead with 15:00 remaining in the game. The Minutewomen scored three unanswered goals late in the game, but it was not enough as the Minutewomen fell to Syracuse, 13-5. Sophomore Nicole Chominski (Southampton, Pa.) scored on a pass from Zelinger at 13:14, followed by a pair of unassisted goals from junior Leslie Pollock (Watervliet, N.Y.).

Junior Cyndi Doyle (Bridgewater, Vt.) made 13 saves in cage for the Minutewomen.
 

 

The Minutewomen return to action on Wednesday, March 27 when they take on St. Bonaventure at Ruth J. Totman field. The game is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
