March 23, 2005
AMHERST, Mass. - A five-goal run to start the second half sparked the No. 10 Hofstra Pride past the UMass women's lacrosse team, 14-8, Wednesday afternoon at Garber Field. The Minutewomen held a 3-2 half time advantage on three goals from freshman Melynda Zwick (Holland, Pa.), but the Pride scored 12 goals in the second frame to secure the win.
Zwick led the Minutewomen (2-4) with her second consecutive hat trick - all in the first half. Fellow freshman Ashleigh Szawlowski (Leeds, Mass.) added two goals in the loss.
Senior defender Kristin St. Hilaire (Syracuse, N.Y.) registered her first career point today as she assisted on a Szawloski's second goal late in the game. St. Hilaire has made 56 consecutive starts for the Maroon & White.
Five players scored two goals each for the Pride on the afternoon: Becky Thorn, Heather Albro, Jen Maget, Casey McGrath, and Mary Romano. The balanced attack was paced by a 39-to-16 shot advantage.
Defensively, Hofstra (6-1) held UMass to just six shots in the second half.
The two teams were deadlocked at 2-2 through much of the first half as Zwick and McGrath traded goals. Zwick then gave the Minutewomen a 3-2 half time lead when she curled into the attack zone for the unassisted goal.
Hofstra scored five consecutive goals in the first five minutes of the second half to take control. Thorn scored just :40 seconds into the action and Albro added back-to-back goals in the run.
Szawlowski ended the run with her first strike of the game, but the Minutewomen could not start a rally of their own.
Second half fouls hurt UMass as they committed 17 to just six for Hofstra.
The Minutewomen return to action on Saturday when they travel to face the University of New Hampshire. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
