Big Second Half Leads To 16-6 Win At Vermont For No. 9 Women's Lax

BURLINGTON, Vt. - The No. 9 UMass women's lacrosse team closed out Vermont with a six-goal run to seal a 16-6 win at Virtue Field on Tuesday afternoon. Sam Rush and Katie Ferris combined for nine of the Minutewomen's 16 goals as UMass picked up its eighth straight win of the season.
Ferris finished the day with a game-high eight points for the second straight game. She had four goals and four assists in the win. Rush netted five goals, while Melissa Carelli had three goals and two assists. Erika Eipp rounded out the top scorers for UMass with two goals and two assists.
UMass (8-0) held a three-goal lead at halftime, but the Catamounts (7-2) cut it to two just under six minutes into the second stanza. The Minutewomen tallied three straight goals in the next four minutes taking a 10-5 lead at the 20:19 mark.
After Vermont cut the lead back to four, UMass closed the game on a six-goal run shutting out the Catamounts for the final 18 minutes of play.
The Catamounts were led by Marcie Marino who had three goals, while Vanessa VanderZalm had two goals and an assist.
Both teams tallied 25 shots in the game, while Vermont held a 13-to-11 edge in draw controls.
Rachel Vallarelli made six saves in the win for UMass, while Meg Hopkins had four saves in the loss for Vermont.
