Women's Lacrosse Defeats George Washington, 12-6

AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Hope Zelinger (Ellicot City, Md.) scored four goals to lead the University of Massachusetts to a 12-6 victory over George Washington University in women's lacrosse action this afternoon. The game marked George Washington's first Atlantic 10 Conference game in the school's first season of women's lacrosse.
The Minutewomen opened the scoring 12 minutes into the contest with a goal by junior Jada Emery (Princeton, N.J.). Zellinger scored her first goal of the game six minutes later to give UMass a 2-0 lead. George Washington got on the board with a goal by Megan McDonough at the 10:16 mark of the first. Zellinger scored again less than a minute later to keep the two-goal lead. George Washington's Jamie Lee scored the first of her three goals to close the gap, 3-2. Freshman Maura McGarrity (Pottstown, Pa.) answered with a goal less than a minute later to close out the first half with a 4-2 lead in favor of the Minutewomen.
UMass opened the second half with three goals in the first two minutes of play, to break open the lead, 7-2. Lee scored for George Washington at the 24:16 mark, but the Minutewomen scored five unanswered goals before the Colonials would score again.
Junior Cyndi Doyle (Bridgewater, Vt.) made 15 saves in the cage for the Minutewomen, while Casey Atkins made 13 saves for the Colonials. The Minutewomen improve to 4-1 on the season, while George Washington falls to 1-2. The Minutewomen return to action with a home game against Syracuse on Sunday, March 24, at noon.
