Big First Half Leads To 16-5 Win Over Vermont For No. 17 Women's Lax

AMHERST, Mass. - A six-goal first half run and a strong second half defensive effort led to a 16-5 win over Vermont for the No. 17 UMass women's lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon at McGuirk Stadium. The Minutewomen allowed just one goal in the second half while leading 9-4 at halftime. UMass will return to action on Saturday afternoon at Sacred Heart.
UMass improves to 6-2 on the season, while Vermont falls to 3-4 with the loss.
Sam Rush led all scorers with four goals and an assist, while Katie Ferris added three goals and an assist as well. Ferris became the fourth player in program history to eclipse the 200-point barrier as she now has 203 career points.
Cori Murray and Lauren Terracciano rounded out the top scorers for UMass with two goals and two assists each. Kelsey McGovern had a game-high eight draw controls, five groundballs and two caused tunovers to lead the Minutewomen on defense. Rachel Vallarelli made four saves in goal to earn the win.
Vermont was led by Sydney Mas who had three goals on the day. Vannessa VanderZlam added two goals, while Karli MacKendrick and Samantha Gallerani each had two assists. Charlotte Lyons took the loss in goal making two saves while allowing seven goals. She split time in cage with Meg Hopkins who had three saves while allowing nine goals.
UMass held a 31-to-13 shot advantage and controlled possession throughout the game. The Minutewomen won 15-of-23 draw controls and held Vermont to just 10-of-20 on clearing attempts.
The game opened with the two teams trading goals within the first four minutes of play. Tanner Guarino's free position shot at the 24:02 mark sparked the six-goal run giving UMass a 7-1 lead that was capped by a Kelsey Sheridan free position goal almost eight minutes later.
Vermont scored twice in the final five minutes of the first half to pull within 9-4 at halftime.
The Minutewomen used another six goal run to start the second half with three straight from Rush followed by two from Ferris and a goal from Murray to go up 15-4 with 12:47 to go.
Mas scored the Catamounts only goal of the second half with 10:27 left in the game.
