Women's Lacrosse Falls 12-7 At Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - UMass took a 2-1 lead within the first nine minutes of Saturday's contest with Harvard, but the Crimson scored six consecutive goals to close out the first half en route to a 12-7 win at Jordan Field in Cambridge. Freshman Kathleen Typadis scored four goals, her third consecutive multi-goal outing, in the loss.
The Minutewomen fall to 1-2 on the season, while Harvard improves to 1-0 with its season-opening win.
The Crimson controlled much of the game outshooting UMass 28-to-17.
Harvard's Elaine Belitsos led all players with six goals in the game.
Allie Kaveney scored the games first goal putting Harvard up 1-0 31 seconds into the game.
UMass responded with back-to-back goals as Lindsey Cassell and Shelley Boyle each scored giving the Minutewomen a 2-1 lead at the 21:35 mark of the first half.
Belitsos notched two of her six scores following that beating UMass keeper Lauren McCarthy twice to retake the lead for Harvard. The Crimson closed out the half on a 6-0 run. Liz Gamble scored twice in the last six minutes of the period to put Harvard up 7-2.
Typadis posted the first of her four goals 13 seconds into the second half. Belitsos and Typadis each traded goals after that before Belitsos scored twice to give Harvard a 10-4 advantage.
Freshman Jeanette Villapiano scored her first goal of the season with 12:38 to play, followed by Typadis' third goal of the half to pull the Minutewomen within four, 10-6.
Catherine Sproul and Belitsos found the back of the cage each in the last seven minutes of action.
Typadis scored her career-high fourth goal of the game with 60 seconds to play, but it was not enough as UMass dropped its second straight game.
UMass will host Albany next Saturday, March 12 at 3:00 p.m. kicking off a three-game home stand.
