AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Hope Zelinger (Ellicott City, Md.) scored a career-high four goals to lead the University of Massachusetts to a 15-2 victory over the College of the Holy Cross in women's lacrosse action this afternoon at Richard F. Garber Field. The game was the season-opener for Massachusetts.

Zelinger opened the scoring at the 27:31 mark of the first half with a free position goal. Holy Cross tied the game a little over three minutes later when Taylor Connelly scored off a feed from Erin Rowse. The Minutewomen then scored four straight goals to take a 5-1 lead. Junior Kelli Kurtz (Schwenksville, Pa.), junior Leslie Pollock (Watervliet, N.Y.), Zelinger and junior Jada Emery (Princeton, N.J.) scored the four Massachusetts goals in the stretch.

Holy Cross cut the lead to 5-2 with 7:35 remaining in the half when Kerry Daly scored off a pass from Connelly. Junior Lydia Robinson (Summit, N.J.) gave the Minutewomen a 6-2 lead at halftime when she scored off a feed from Pollock with 32 seconds left in the half.

The second half was all Massachusetts as the Minutewomen scored nine goals to make the final score 15-2. Junior Lori Kain (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and freshman Sara DiOrazio (Webster, N.Y.) both scored two goals in the half, while Zelinger added another pair to give her four on the day. Kurtz and Robinson each scored their second goals of the game, while freshman Maura McGarrity (Pottstown, Pa.) scored her first career goal.

Junior Cyndi Doyle (Bridgewater, Vt.) made five saves in the cage for the Minutewomen, while Kellaigh Malangone made 14 saves for Holy Cross. The Minutewomen begin the season at 1-0 with the victory, while Holy Cross falls to 1-1. Massachusetts returns to action on Wednesday, March 6, when it travels to Hofstra for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game.
