Women's Lacrosse Drops Season-Opener At Holy Cross, 11-8
Feb. 25, 2006
WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman Kaytlin McCormick (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored four goals to lead the women's lacrosse team on Saturday at Holy Cross, but it was not enough as the Crusaders scored bridged the first and second half with seven unanswered goals to pick up the 11-8 win. Sophomore Kathleen Typadis (Medfield, Mass.) scored two goals and seniors Kerri Connerty (Nashua, N.H.) and Lindsay Cassell (Weston, Mass.) each added one.
Despite the start time being moved back an hour, the Hart Center Turf Field was still covered with over an inch of snow at times during the game.
McCormick tallied the opening goal of the game, but Holy Cross ripped off five consecutive to end the first half. The Crusaders added two more at the start of the second half before McCormick was able to end the run pulling UMass to within 7-2.
The Minutewomen then rallied back outscoring the Crusaders 7-6 in the second half. Connerty scored on a free position shot followed by McCormick's third goal of the game to make the score 8-4 with almost nine minutes to play.
UMass scored three goals within a 65-second span five minutes later as Cassell tallied her goal and Typadis added her two making the score 9-7.
Goals by Nikki Bolduc and Patricia Sutton at the 56:40 and 57:54 marks, however, ended UMass' comeback hopes.
Redshirt junior Lauren McCarthy (Derry, N.H.) posted 10 saves in cage, while Megan Orr - the 2005 Patriot League Goalie of the Year - made eight stops. Defensively, freshman Holly Drown (Nashua, N.H.) had six groundballs to lead UMass, while McCormick had four and added three caused turnovers.
UMass will open its home schedule on Wednesday, March 1 when the Minutewomen host No. 8 Boston University at Garber Field. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
