AMHERST, Mass. - Tanner Guarino and Katie Ferris each scored a pair of goals to lead the UMass women's lacrosse team to a 13-11 win over Boston University on Wednesday afternoon at McGuirk Stadium. The Minutewomen closed out the first half with five unanswered goals and never relinquished the lead afterwards. UMass will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 25 as Marist visits for a 1 PM opening draw.

With the win, UMass improves to 2-0 on the season, while Boston University falls to 0-1.

Along with Ferris and Guarino, who also had an assist each in the game, Jesse O'Donnell posted a pair of goals and a pair of assists to lead the Minutewomen. Cori Murray, Kelsey McGovern and Lauren Terracciano also scored goals for UMass, while Katie Florence made six saves in the win.

Boston University was led by Danielle Etrasco who had a game-high five goals along with two assists. Hannah Frey and Mallory Collins both posted two goals, while Christina Sheridan made nine saves in the loss.

Aptly enough, the game's opening goal was scored by Ferris off a feed from Guarino just 53 seconds into the contest. Boston University rattled off three straight scores with a pair from Etrasco to go up 3-1 in the first eight minutes of play.

UMass tied the game at 3-3 on a pair of goals from Cori Murray and Guarino, but the Terriers jumped back up by two goals when Etrasco posted back-to-back tallies.

O'Donnell scored her first of two goals in the game with 12:44 to go in the first half to spark the five-goal run. Guarino's second goal tied the game at 5-5 just over three minutes later, while a free position shot from McGovern with 50 seconds left gave the Minutewomen an 8-5 lead at halftime.

The second half started with O'Donnell scoring 51 seconds into the stanza, however, the Terriers scored three of the next four goals cutting the lead back to two goals, 18-8, with just under 20 minutes left in regulation.

A pair of Ferris goals and Guarino's fourth of the day in a span of 94 seconds put UMass back up 13-8 with 14:15 remaining. The Terriers mounted a comeback rally scoring three straight to pull back within two, 13-11, but the UMass defense stood strong in the final moments of the game hold Boston University scoreless for the balance of the game.

UMass outshot Boston University 32-to-22 for the game and held a 14-to-12 edge in draw controls. The Minutewomen committed a season-low eight turnovers in the game, while the Terriers had 11.
