Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. --Junior Hope Zelinger (Ellicott City, Md.) scored three goals to lift the UMass women's lacrosse team over Holy Cross, 10-5, on Saturday at Richard F. Garber Field. The Minutewomen's victory gives them a 1-0 start to open the new season.

Zelinger got UMass on the board first when she scored 5:33 into the first half. Holy Cross came back to even the game at 1-1 when Katie Britt scored at the 7:26 mark. The tie was broken when sophomore Maura McGarrity (Chester Springs, Pa.) found the back of the net 14:05 into the first half. Senior Leslie Pollock (Watervliet, N.Y.) scored at 22:16 to give UMass a 3-1 lead, but Holy Cross scored two goals late in the first half to tie the game at the intermission.

The Minutewomen got their offense going quickly in the second half, scoring three goals in the first five minutes of the period when junior Tracey Drown (Nashua, N.H.), Zelinger and senior Lydia Robinson (Summit, N.J.) were all able to find the back of the net. Holy Cross was able to put two more points on the board during the second half, but UMass' offense was too much to overcome as Zelinger, Drown and Robinson each tallied two goals in the second half.

Saturday's win gives head coach Carrie Bolduc her first victory at the helm of the Minutewomen, and lifts UMass to an early 1-0 record.

UMass will next compete on Feb. 28 when they take on UConn at 3:00 p.m. on Richard F. Garber Field.
