Women's Lacrosse Battles By Holy Cross, 12-6

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass women's lacrosse used balanced scoring as nine players recorded at least one goal to lead the Minutewomen to a 12-6 victory over Holy Cross at McGuirk Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Katie Ferris led the squad with six points on a pair of tallies and four assists while Tanner Guarino and Sam Rush added two goals apiece in the win.
Laura Ryan led the Crusaders with three goals. Avery Giorgia, Sara Hennessey and Margie Smith added one goal apiece for the visitors.
The Minutewomen scored twice to start the game, with Guarino and Rush finding the back of the net in the span of 51 seconds to give UMass a 2-0 lead. Guarino tallied at the 28:45 mark while Rush added her first goal of the day with 27 minutes, 54 seconds remaining in the opening half.
The Crusaders responded with two tallies of their own to even the game at 2-2, but the Minutewomen answered with five consecutive goals to push in front, 7-2. Troost capped the run with 11:35 remaining in the stanza on a free position shot for her first tally of the season.
Hennessey ended the UMass streak unassisted at the 5:36 mark, but Murphy responded for the home side only 62 seconds later to give Massachusetts an 8-3 advantage, which the squad held into halftime.
The Minutewomen continued to roll on offense following the break, reeling off three consecutive goals by the Sadoff, Boden and Guarino to push the margin to 11-3. After Guarino earned her second of the day unassisted with 19:19 remaining, the Crusaders notched three of the final four goals to reach the final score, 12-6.
Massachusetts led in shots, 22-13 and also totaled more groundballs, 15-14 and draw controls, 12-8. The UMass defense forced Holy Cross into a 14-for-20 finish on clear attempts while the Minutewomen went 14-of-17 in the category.
Rachel Vallarelli played the opening 44:08 of the game in net for Massachusetts and made three saves against as many goals given up. Leigh Henjes subbed in for Vallarelli to close out the final 15:52 and made one stop while allowing a trio of tallies to the Crusaders.
Sarah Weber played the entirety of the game in the goal for Holy Cross, earning seven saves on the contest.
The Minutewomen host their second consecutive home game when Boston University visits McGuirk Stadium on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
