Track Finishes Ninth At NE Championship

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Massachusetts women's indoor track and field team finished ninth out of 27 teams at the New England Indoor Championship held at Smith College. The Minutewomen tallied 30 points in the two day meet.

Northeastern claimed the NE Indoor Championship title with 140 points, while Connecticut finished second with 116.50 points and Wheaton placed third with 62.50 points.

Massachusetts tallied its 20 points on Saturday with solid performances from sophomore Christina Huff (Springfield, Mass.), juniors Brandy Green (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Shannon Jackson (Bridgewater, Mass.) and seniors Katherine Blais (Andover, Mass.) and Jen Freemas (Wallingford, Pa.).

Blais recorded the highest finish of the day for the Minutewomen, finishing fourth in the 1,000-meter run at 2:59.36. Huff placed fifth in the 200-meter dash at 25.88 while Freemas finished fifth in the 500-meter dash at 1:18.17. UMass had two athletes place in the 55-meter high hurdles when Jackson finished seventh (8.43) and Green placed eighth (8.96).

UMass also tallied a sixth place finish in the 4x400 meter relay at 3:59.08.
