Trio Tabbed As Field Hockey Captains For 2012

Rising seniors Elizabeth Karns, Callie Sweigart and Kim Young have been named captains of the UMass field hockey team for the 2012 campaign, head coach Carla Tagliente announced on Wednesday. UMass Field Hockey Honored For Work In The Classroom

A school record 10 UMass field hockey student-athletes were recognized for their work in the classroom when the National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced the 2011 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad on Monday. The team was also one of 60 squads to receive The National Academic Team Award, which honors those institutions that have achieved a Team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the first semester of the 2011-12 academic year. 130 Named To A-10 Commissioner's Fall Honor Roll

A total of 130 UMass student-athletes earned Atlantic 10 Commissioner Fall Honor Roll accolades as announced by the league office. A total of 1,348 student-athletes in the league posted 3.5 GPA's or better which is the most in Bernadette McGlade's tenure as league commissioner. UMass' total marks the most honored since Spring 2007 when 134 earned the distinction. MORE

UMass Offers Girls & Women In Sports Clinic Sunday

UMass will offer a National Girls and Women in Sports Clinic on Sunday, Feb. 19 from Noon-1:15 PM in Boyden Gymnasium. The Clinic is free and will consist of stations from various women's sports teams at UMass including women's soccer, field hockey, cheerleading, rowing, and more. UMass Field Hockey Signs Seven To NLIs

UMass field hockey head coach Carla Tagliente has announced the signing of seven student-athletes who will join the Minutewomen for the 2012 season. Sam Carlino, Hannah Hayward, Allie Sabia, Brooke Sabia, Courtney Spleen, Noralie Weusthuis and Madie Zimmerman have all inked National Letters of Intent to play for UMass as members of the Class of 2016. Field hockey senior Alesha Widdall and junior Kim Young were tabbed Longstreth/NFCHA Division I All-Region in the Northeast on Thursday morning. This is the fourth time Widdall has taken home the honor, while being the first for Young. MORE

Softball's Sara Plourde and rowing's varsity four boat of Heather Pekarovich, Arielle Gillette, Hannah Monahan, Emily Sgarlat, and Adrienne Breef-Pilz were named the UMass Athletes of the Week following standout performances at the A-10 Championship Tournament and the Eastern Sprints, respectively.
