Field Hockey's King And Widdall To Play In Junior Pan Am Cup
  • Minutewomen Add Transfer Powers From URI
    Two UMass field hockey players will represent their respective countries in the upcoming Junior Pan Am Cup. Freshman goalkeeper Alesha Widdall will play for the United States and junior forward Cher King (pictured) will play for Barbados in the tournament to be played in Mexico City on October 3-12. The competition serves as a qualifier for the 2009 Junior World Cup. (more)

    UMass field hockey head coach Justine Sowry has announced that Jill Powers has transferred to UMass from Rhode Island and will join the Minutewomen for the 2008 season as a junior. A 5-2 forward, Powers led the Rams in scoring in both of her seasons in Kingston. She transfers to UMass following the elimination of the field hockey program at URI. (more)

    UMass Field Hockey Players And Coach Competing At High Performance National Championship

    Three UMass field hockey players and one coach traveled to Virginia Beach this weekend to compete in USA Field Hockey's High Performance National Championship. Senior midfielder Mary Shea, sophomore back Jackie Tait, and assistant coach Kelly Dostal are playing for the New England team, while incoming freshman goalkeeper Alesha Widdall is playing for the Pennsylvania/California team. The six-team tournament began on Saturday, June 14 with pool play and concludes with the medal round on Saturday, June 21. The US team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics will be selected following the tournament. (more)

    Field Hockey Releases Its 2008 Schedule
  • 2008 Field Hockey Schedule
    UMass field hockey head coach Justine Sowry has released the Minutewomen's 2008 schedule. The defending Atlantic 10 champions have 19 games scheduled, 12 of which will be home games played at Garber Field. UMass' challenging schedule includes seven teams that were either ranked or receiving votes in last season's final NFHCA poll.

    UMass field hockey held its end of the year banquet on Saturday evening, where the program celebrated its 2007 season, announced award winners, and honored its senior class. The event was held in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center and featured two guest speakers, Megan Donnelly ('85), a Broderick Award winner as a player, former coach of the Minutewomen, and UMass Hall of Famer; and Judy Strong ('81), a National Player of the Year, the program's all-time leading scorer, and UMass Hall of Famer.

    Field Hockey Spring Schedule Underway
    UMass field hockey, fresh off its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2001, kicked off the beginning of its 2008 spring exhibition season last weekend with games vs. Yale, Holy Cross, and UConn. UMass and Yale played two 40-minute periods, with the Minutewomen outscoring the Bulldogs, 5-1. In two 40-minute periods vs. Holy Cross, UMass outscored the Crusaders, 4-2. On Sunday at UConn, the teams played three periods with the Huskies outscoring the Minutewomen, 4-0. The teams played two periods of 7-on-7 to a 0-0 tie.
