Verelst Garners UMass Co-Athlete Of The Week
Nov. 18, 2013
AMHERST, Mass. - Field hockey freshman midfielder Charlotte Verelst picked up UMass Co-Athlete of the Week honors on Monday afternoon. Verelst shares the weekly award with hockey's Mac Haight stopped 51 of the 61 shots he faced over the two recent contests with No. 7 Boston College, including 31 saves in Thursday's matchup.
The duo will be recognized at this week's UMass Sports Luncheon, which will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 20, from Noon to 1:15 p.m. in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center. Guest speakers this week will be head coach John Micheletto and a member of the football coaching staff.
Parking is available directly West of the Mullins Center free of charge and a $13 salad-to-dessert buffet is provided for all attendees to purchase. The event is open to the public.
Verelst scored the overtime game-winner during the NCAA Tournament First Round meeting with No. 7 Virginia on Saturday, Nov. 16, as the Minutewomen defeated the Cavaliers, 4-3. Verelst used back-to-back shots in the 81st minute to end the game. The freshman from Braine l'Alleud, Belgium, dribbled into the circle and fired an attempt into the legs of a Virginia defender. After the ball kicked back to Verelst, she gathered the loose play and sent a shot high into the back-left corner to earn the game-winner, her second of the year.
