Zono Named UMass Athlete of the Week

AMHERST, Mass. - Field hockey senior defender Thando Zono was recognized as the UMass Athlete of the Week on Monday following a strong showing at the A-10 Tournament. Zono produced 11 points on five goals and an assist during victories over Temple and No. 16 Richmond and the Minutewomen earned the 2012 Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament Championship.

Against Temple, Zono recorded a pair of goals and an assist to help the Minutewomen to a 5-2 victory in the semifinals of A-10 competition. The Grahamstown, South Africa, native followed the performance with three goals against the Spiders in the championship, earning Most Outstanding Player of the tournament in the process.

Zono has been a constant contributor on both side of the field as a starting defender, with 29 points on 12 goals and five assists over 16 games played. For her success on the field and in the classroom this season Zono was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team and All-Academic squad following the conclusion of the regular season.

The Minutewomen continue their season with an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, learning their opponent during the selection show on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 8 p.m.
