Field Hockey Sweeps Weekly Awards

AMHERST, Mass. - With three victories in as many games, No. 14 nationally ranked UMass field hockey earned a trio of weekly awards from the Atlantic 10 Conference and University of Massachusetts Athletic Department on Monday. Brooke Sabia received the A-10 Player of the Week accolade while Charlotte Verelst took home the top rookie laurel from the conference. Alexa Sikalis tallied the UMass Athlete of the Week award to round out the group.
Sikalis will be honored at the weekly UMass Sports Luncheon, held on Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the Mullins Center Massachusetts Room from Noon until 1:15 p.m. The full salad to dessert buffet is $13 to purchase and parking is available in the lot directly West of the Mullins Center.
Sabia earned 10 points on five goals during the three-game span, which included wins over UMass-Lowell, 6-0, Harvard, 3-0 and #19 Boston College, 4-2. The award marks the second consecutive week Sabia has received a portion of the A-10 player honor.
Verelst finished with an assist in each contest, including on the eventual game-winner against Harvard. Verelst's first collegiate point came on one of Sabia's two goals again UMass-Lowell, helping to put the Minutewomen ahead, 2-0.
Sikalis also tallied a trio of helpers during the week to move her team- and conference-leading total to five on the season.
The Minutewomen return to action with a game against No. 5 Syracuse (4-0) in Syracuse, N.Y., at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13.
