Minutewomen Receiving Votes In Field Hockey Preseason Coaches Poll

AMHERST, Mass. - The STX/NFHCA Division I Field Hockey Preseason Coaches Poll was released on Tuesday with UMass receiving 68 votes. The Minutewomen just missed the top-20 by being the top "Receiving Votes" school. Four of UMass' opponents this season are ranked - Connecticut, Boston College, Syracuse, and Albany. Three other opponents received votes.
Defending national champion North Carolina garnered the top spot in the poll, receiving 29 out of 35 possible first-place votes. 2005 and 2006 champion Maryland is second, followed by 2002-04 champion Wake Forest in third.
2007 national semifinalist and UMass' Sept. 12 opponent at Garber Field, UConn, is fourth in the preseason poll and received one first-place vote. The Huskies were ranked fourth both times the Minutewomen played them last season - once in the regular season and in the NCAA Tournament.
The other 2008 UMass foes that are ranked are No. 13 Boston College (Aug. 29 away), No. 18 Syracuse (Sept. 28 home), and No. 19 Albany (Sept. 27 home).
The Minutewomen's Nov. 1 opposition, Providence, received 60 votes; Sept. 7 foe Northeastern, received 18, and Oct. 26 opponent Temple, received 13.
The Maroon & White received 22 votes in the final coaches poll of 2007, which came out Nov. 6, prior to the Minutewomen defeating No. 17 Princeton, 2-1, in an NCAA Tournament Play-In Game.
UMass opens the regular season on Friday at No. 13 Boston College at 7 p.m. The Minutewomen have their home-opener on Sunday when they host Quinnipiac at noon at Garber Field.
