NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference released its 2013 preseason poll on Thursday, with UMass field hockey taking first among the eight league affiliates with 63 votes. The Minutewomen claimed seven of the eight first place votes to edge Richmond (57 points, one first place vote) for the top spot.

VCU claimed third with 46 points while Lock Haven (35) and La Salle (30) rounded out the top five. Saint Joseph's was picked sixth (28) while the newest addition to Atlantic 10 field hockey, Saint Francis (Pa.) was tabbed seventh with 16 points. Saint Louis rounded out the group with 13.

The Minutewomen finished the 2012 season with a 15-9 overall record and 6-1 mark in Atlantic 10 Conference games. UMass reached the NCAA Tournament following an A-10 Championship Game victory over Richmond, 5-0 and a 2-1 overtime win vs. Rider in the NCAA Play-In Game.

The Minutewomen open the 2013 season at the University of Maine Invitational from Aug. 30-31 and will face UMass-Lowell in the home-opener on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 6 p.m.
