AMHERST, Mass. - Rising seniors Elizabeth Karns, Callie Sweigart and Kim Young have been named captains of the UMass field hockey team for the 2012 campaign, head coach Carla Tagliente announced on Wednesday. The trio will be looking to guide the Minutewomen to their 13th Atlantic 10 championship this upcoming fall.

Young led UMass in scoring in 2011 as a junior with 13 points on four goals and five assists, including two game-winners. The midfielder started all 18 games and helped the Minutewomen capture a share of the A-10 regular season title en route to an All-Atlantic 10 First Team selection and a spot on the Longstreth/NFCHA Division I All-Region squad for the Northeast.

Karns and Sweigart were part of a UMass defense that posted a 1.93 goals-against average and three shutouts in 2011. Sweigart finished second on the team in scoring with 10 points on three goals and four assists and started all 18 contests. Karns played in 14 of 18 games with one start.
